The New What? Thirteen Who?

One night, right after we graduated from college, my best friend and I were on the phone talking about life and how it is as confusing as all get out, when I said…

“Well haven’t you heard? Twenty-three is the new thirteen!”

At thirteen, I thought that life couldn’t get much more dramatic and confusing. I couldn’t imagine how I would survive life in my twenties; I figured it would be like living in a soap opera. Then as I crept up in my teens I figured that my twenties would be when I would finally escape the drama and confusion; I would be an Adult.

However, now that I’m here, I find that life isn’t any more or less dramatic and confusing, and it doesn’t really resemble a soap opera (at least not all the time).  The drama changes, the confusion passes and manifests in some other area, but it never stops completely, and I have a feeling that as long as I’m alive it never will.

Whether I’m 23, 33, 43, 53, or 93, life will always be a wonderful, confusing, mess, and I think maybe now I’m finally ready to embrace that fact and start to get my hands dirty.

Life can be a lot like a bunch of tiny islands surrounded by a sea of misery. For a long time I was curious just to see what was going to happen next…
